Driving from Agadir to Marrakech: What You Need to Know
The Agadir-Marrakech route is one of the most frequently driven inter-city journeys in southern Morocco. A meeting, a connecting flight, a family visit, or simply a step in a larger itinerary. The distance is approximately 250 kilometres by the most direct route, and the journey time varies significantly based on which road you choose.
Here are the options, the real timings, and the decisions to make before setting off.
---
The Three Routes
1. The Express Coastal Route (N1 + A7) — Fastest
Route: Agadir → coastal N1 north → Chichaoua → Marrakech via the A7 motorway
Distance: approximately 250 km Time: 3h to 3h30 outside peak hours
The most direct and fastest option. The route follows the Atlantic coast northward for about 40 kilometres, then turns inland. The A7 motorway between Chichaoua and Marrakech is in good condition. Tolls apply — expect a total of a few dozen dirhams.
Practical note: avoid departing on Friday afternoon (congestion around Chichaoua and into Marrakech) and returning on Sunday evening.
---
2. The Arganeraie Route — The Interest-Speed Compromise
Route: Agadir → Taroudant → Aït Benhaddou → Marrakech
Distance: approximately 330 km Time: 4h30 to 5h30
This route crosses the Souss plain, passes through Taroudant, and follows the northern flank of the High Atlas. Longer, but the landscape justifies the additional time if you're not constrained by a schedule. The road between Aït Benhaddou and Marrakech via the Tichka pass is spectacular.
---
3. Via the Tichka Pass — For Those Who Want Grand Scenery
Route: Agadir → Taroudant → Tichka pass (N9) → Marrakech
Distance: approximately 350–370 km Time: 5h to 6h
The Tichka is Morocco's highest road pass (2,260 metres). The road is beautiful and well-maintained. In winter (December to March), snowfall can temporarily close the pass — check conditions before using this route in cold months.

What to Prepare for the Journey
Fuel: fill up before leaving Agadir. On the express route, stations are regular. On the Taroudant and Tichka itineraries, they're more spread out — don't let the tank drop below half.
Documents: driving licence and passport should be accessible. Police checkpoints exist on national roads.
Vehicle comfort: on a 3 to 6 hour journey, the vehicle's comfort matters. A properly air-conditioned saloon with decent seats changes the experience of the drive. If you're travelling with several people and luggage, a minivan or large estate is more appropriate than a compact hatchback.

Berkars and Inter-City Rentals
Berkars offers car hire with or without return to Agadir for journeys to Marrakech and other major Moroccan cities. Vehicles suited to long-distance driving — diesel Logan, Duster, Lodgy — are available by the week or by the day, with long-distance insurance included.
Contact us for details: one-way rental conditions to Marrakech or another city need to be specified at booking.

The Return: Marrakech to Agadir
The same logic applies in reverse. The A7 express route remains the most efficient option. A note for those arriving in Marrakech from the north and picking up a car at Marrakech Ménara Airport: plan your fuel and toll money from the motorway exit — the first stations after Chichaoua can be busy on a Sunday evening.
