Car Rental Agadir to the Sahara – Zagora in 6 Hours, Merzouga in 8
Morocco's Sahara begins where the tarmac ends — and with the right car, you can be there in a matter of hours from Agadir. Zagora, gateway to the desert on the road to Mhamid, is 6 hours away via Taroudant and Ouarzazate. Merzouga and its iconic Erg Chebbi dunes are 8–9 hours via the same axis or via Marrakech and Rissani.
BERKARS strongly recommends an SUV or 4x4 for these journeys: the Dacia Duster (diesel, high ground clearance) is ideally suited for pistes around Zagora and Mhamid. Unlimited mileage is included — the 600–1,100 km of these Saharan road trips are covered in your rental rate.

Frequently asked questions
Q.Which route do you recommend from Agadir to the Sahara?
Our recommendation: Agadir → Taroudant → Ouarzazate → Zagora (around 350 km, 5–6 hours). This route passes through varied landscapes and avoids snowy passes in winter. For Merzouga, continue from Ouarzazate towards Boumalne Dadès, Tinghir and Erfoud (200 km further).
Q.Do I absolutely need a 4x4 to reach the Sahara?
For Zagora (tarmac all the way to the desert entrance): a saloon is sufficient. For pistes around Mhamid and bivouacs in the open dunes: a 4x4 like the Duster is strongly recommended.
Q.Are there petrol stations between Agadir and Zagora?
Yes, stations are available in Taroudant, Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate. Fill up at each town — gaps between stations lengthen after Ouarzazate.
